When asked to describe my top four core values, I would have to say 1) fairness, 2) honesty, 3) accountability and 4) ethics. I have been in the business for over 30 years and one of the things I use to be told by management is, “It doesn’t matter how you feel or what you believe in, at the end of the day it is about what is in black and white”. My top four core values went against everything that management told me back then.
Fairness-goes back to childhood for me, so this is a core value that has been rooted in me since I can remember. I can recall my grandmother telling me to treat others as I would want to be treated. To understand the true meaning and what goes with it, you would have to be treated unfairly. Whether it was jumping rope as a child with my friends, sharing chores with my siblings or competing for the promotion in a corporate environment, you want the process to be fair, not just for you , but for others as well. This is grounded in everyone as a child, and I ask the question, why would it not be considered a value now?
Honesty-is something that is taken for granted, and not valued as it should be. For me this is crucial to one’s character. I cannot knowingly look at myself in the mirror thinking that not being truthful is okay. I have encountered people who try to dress up dishonesty. This is another one of those core values that people don’t think about or appreciate until someone has been dishonest with you and then and only then you put honesty in that category of core values.
Ethics-is another core value that people dance around and manipulate. Being ethical is not something that comes easy to some people. There is a certain class of people who would do whatever it takes to get to the top, and 4 out of 5 of those individuals lack in ethical morals.
Accountability-is a core value that is important and one that is most personal. When asked why accountability holds personal value, this is the one quality that helps you to grow as a person. I always believe when you hold yourself accountable for the choices you make, you own them; the good, the bad and the ugly. This is what is tied to staying grounded no matter what side of the coin you may be on. In my opinion, it is one of the most important values.
