I am checking in as a +1 today. I am feeling well rested and encouraged despite the snow and cold. I had a great weekend and a good Easter with my family.
There are several ways that business has evolved. A few of these can be seen in the sexist, homophobic, and misogynistic marketing, and hiring practices that led to deep set stereotypes about the roles in which men and women operate in the workplace as well as larger society (Mackey and Sisodia, p. 29). Other examples of business-as-usual practices that have been left in the past are stockholder focused business models that operate in spite of ecological and social education. Businesses cannot get away with vastly wasteful policies and socially neutral practices that have ties to systematic racism. Examples of this include the disproportionate pollution found in non-white, and low income communities (Katz and Kay, 2012). While these practices have not completely disappeared from the industry today, they are deeply unpopular and risk businesses irreparable reputation damages and larger legal consequences.
In Mackey and Sisodia’s Conscious Capitalism, they argue strongly and continuously for businesses to include the perspectives of all stakeholders in high regard when making decisions. This philosophy of a stakeholder centered approach is one of the foundations of what they argue is the best possible paradigm to be adopted by businesses (Mackey and Sisodia pp. 30-31). Being stakeholder centered is a concept I am quite familiar with in my public health studies. In the coursework and research I have completed I relied upon a very similar concept called person or patient centeredness. This concept follows many of the same mainstays as the stakeholder focused philosophy of Mackey and Sisodia but usually is largely focused on the healthcare setting.
When examining businesses that represent either one of these philosophies, I chose a company that I think does an effective job at emanating the new paradigm outlined by Mackey and Sisodia. The company in question is Apple Inc. I chose this business for several reasons. First because of its massive influence both in commerce and in popular culture. Second because of the massive changes it has made in the company policy to adhere to the idea of a better, greener future. Third because tech companies historically are large producers of waste and while Apple is to be commended by their eco-friendly initiatives these changes cannot be heralded without scrutiny (Dayaram 2023).

I am checking in at a +2 today. I am feeling appreciative and encouraged. I had a great long Easter weekend with my family and am now encouraged to get back to work.
There are many “business as usual” practices that are no longer valid. Some examples of this include target marketing an inappropriate audience, misleading customers, bribing, using customer data inappropriately, harassing employees, and not being ecofriendly. These are no longer valid for many reasons, we have become more ethical and moral as a society, we have new priorities, and we have seen the negative effect these practices have had on businesses and society. The new philosophy and paradigm for business should focus on benefiting society, improving human lives, and being conscious of the environment while doing so. Dove is a great company that has a great vision, philosophy, and paradigm. Dove believes beauty should be a source of confidence and not anxiety, That’s why we are here to help women everywhere develop a positive relationship with the way they look, helping them raise their self-esteem and realize their full potential. This is a great example of a business trying to improve human lives and create meaningful relationships with their customers. Dove started the self-esteem project back in 2004 which helps educate the next generation of women so they can grow up feeling confident and happy with the way they look. Dove is also committed to environmental protection. These are just a few of Dove’s current practices that make them stand out.
