Writing that is filled with incorrect spelling and grammar will not be accepted. • Only your own words will count toward the writing requirements. The writing assignments are intended to assess your comprehension of the material. Meaning, cited and paraphrased information should not be in your word counts. • Do not use first person tones in the formal papers/essays. The prompts are designed to help you think about the topic, not to generate a direct response. First person tone is inappropriate in a collegiate research-based essay. Each discussion activity involves an element of independent research and critical analysis. I will post the discussion question at the beginning of a unit. The questions will address your understanding of central themes in the textbook and your ability to think critically about the course material to apply it to real life situations. The intent is to go beyond the course textbook. The minimum research criteria is one reputable source (article from an expert). You should use a peer-reviewed academic journal article for the best quality information from the experts on a given topic. Other examples of reputable sources include policy briefs by policy think tanks, position papers presented at academic conferences, and/or other high quality sources from reputable sources (people with a reputation on the topic/issue). The course textbook, reference materials, Wikipedia, internet search engines, blogs and similar items are examples of unacceptable sources on the collegiate level. The minimum writing requirement for the original post is 500 of your own words, excluding any cited information. Your responses are to be in essay/paragraph format, meaning the answers logically flow into a comprehensive analysis. Be sure to fully address each prompt and cite supporting evidence. The grade for the primary post will be determined by the quality, depth and originality of your writing. Incomplete, late or partially submitted posts will not earn partial credit. Finally, provide a word count at the end of the post and a works cited list for all sources actually cited in your body text Research and Citation requirements • A minimum number of academic journal articles must be cited and referenced in each writing assignment. Review assignment guidelines carefully. The “Research Center” tool is built into the course to help you obtain academic journal articles. • All key arguments, assertions, claims, and facts must be supported with high quality, college-appropriate, citations in all written work. • Failure to identify sources is plagiarism. MLA citation style is mandatory for all outside sources in all written work. o Proper formatting is required. Points are deducted from assignments if incorrect formatting is used in either the in-text citations or references. o All references must also be cited using parenthetical in-text citations. o All in-text citations must have a corresponding reference in the Works Cited page. • Plagiarism and Fabrication (claiming a reference/citation supports an argument when it does not) are violations of the DCCCD Student Code of Conduct and will result in an automatic failing course grade and referral to the Vice President of Student Services. • The course textbook, Wikipedia, internet search engines, blogs and similar items are examples of unacceptable research sources at the collegiate level. o High quality sources (academic journals, scholarly articles, current laws/policy, court cases, etc.) must be used for writing assignments. o There is a tool built into the course to help you obtain quality sources for your writing assignments. It is labeled “research center” on the main menu of the course. For current events related information, use a newspaper, news magazine or news website. • Use parenthetical, in-text citations.
