ENG 201 (MLA FORMAT)

Rodney: If Enkidu from “The Epic of Gilgamesh” had the opportunity to read Sun Tzu’s “The Art of War,” one specific strategy he should have implemented is the principle of adapting tactics based on terrain and circumstances. Sun Tzu emphasizes that successful warfare requires flexibility and adaptability, adjusting strategies to capitalize on advantages and exploit weaknesses.

In “The Epic of Gilgamesh,” Enkidu is introduced as a wild man who later becomes Gilgamesh’s trusted companion and ally. Known for his strength and connection to nature, Enkidu often engages in battles and confrontations that test his abilities. If Enkidu had applied Sun Tzu’s strategy of adapting tactics, he might have been more adept at assessing battlefield conditions and adjusting his approach accordingly.

For instance, in the encounter with Humbaba, the monstrous guardian of the Cedar Forest, Enkidu could have employed Sun Tzu’s advice to understand the terrain and Humbaba’s strengths and weaknesses more thoroughly. This strategic approach could have led to a more coordinated and effective plan with Gilgamesh, potentially minimizing risks and ensuring a more successful outcome.

If Enkidu had followed Sun Tzu’s teachings, his actions and battles might have unfolded differently. Enkidu would have paid more attention to Cedar Forest’s geographical features and adjusted his strategy accordingly. This could have included utilizing natural impediments or selecting strategic positions that provided him with an advantage over Humbaba. Understanding Humbaba’s vulnerabilities through reconnaissance or intelligence gathering would have allowed Enkidu to design more effective techniques for exploiting these flaws, boosting his chances of victory.

Natalie:
The Art of War in
The Epic of Gilgamesh

Sun Tzu’s
The Art of War has made thousands of people rethink how they do things, especially when it comes to warfare. In the
Epic of Gilgamesh someone who could have really benefited from reading this would have been Humbaba, the guardian of the cedar forest. As we know, Gilgamesh and Enkidu set out to battle him, and they succeeded. One chapter that Humbaba could have benefited from would have been chapter 6: Vacuity and Substance. This chapter states the importance of the enemy being forced to react or be provoked into reaction. It also states you should not make it obvious where you are attacking, but first try and find the enemy’s weakness and evaluating their ability to respond to attacks in different places. This battle between Humbaba and Gilgamesh and Enkidu were supposed to be a very difficult battle. Enkidu was even very weary going into battle stating that he was very scared they would not succeed. When it came to battle, it almost seemed like Humbaba never even tried to scope out his enemies, and instead tried to “talk sense” into them, which in fact failed. It almost seemed as he never even put up a fight. I know for many, it was a good thing that Gilgamesh and Enkidu won this battle, but one must think maybe if Humbaba had read
The Art of War, the outcome of the battle would have ended a little differently.

Scarlett: In America, during the late nineteenth to early twentieth century a group of journalists named the muckrakers gained importance and acted as a driving force in the progressive movement, as they stood to expose corruption within politics and the economy as well as identify abuse of power in the US (Editors of Encyclopaedia, 2024). By bringing issues up to light such as terrible industrial work conditions, capital punishment and monopolistic work strategies, progress was made in many ways. This included standards being brought in such as the New York Tenant House Act of 1901, which was achieved through Jacob Riss releasing images to expose poverty. Other laws were brought in to help with health and safety. Many Muckrackers were book publishers which helped the word wider spread across the nation by finding an emotional connection. Some authors include Ida Tarbell, Ray Stannard Baker.

Even though nowadays society is very different, there are still many modern journalists that aim to help like the muckrakers did. Greta Thunberg, even though she isn’t a journalist is an environmental climate activist, who exposes humans and big companies non eco friendly actions, while attempting to teach the world about the planets sad future and what can be done to help to reverse the effects as much as possible (BBC News, 2024). Another example is Tarana Burke who created the #metoo movement by giving the honest truth about sexual assault which started a wave of realisation within woman about sexual assault, which worked well against rape and harassment culture (Biography: Tarana Burke, n.d.). There are many more examples in many sectors and play the same role as the muckrakers, wiping away the cover from todays problems like raking up muck from the street.

Alyssa: Muckrakers were a group of journalists who, not only aimed to expose but to inspire the American public to find solutions to a wide array of social scandals and inequities (Corbett et al., 2014). The outrage instigated by their reports on issues such as poor working and living conditions for the working class was fundamental in growing the Progressive movement (Corbett et al., 2014). These reports were often strengthened using photography to evoke a stronger emotional reaction; thus, the title of “Muckraker” was not solely reserved for writers. For example, photographer Jacob Riis shared images of children in the New York City slums to illuminate the suffering of the urban poor (Corbett et al., 2014). Although disliked by President Theodore Roosevelt, their tactics incited political change through progressive activists who lobbied for legislation to rectify some of the largest concerns during the Gilded Age (Corbett et. al, 2014).

Today, journalists continue to play a similar role by reporting on social issues to influence how American citizens voice their outrage and seek change, often through their right to vote.  However, the topics of their articles have taken on a more global scope. For example, where activists in the late 19th century used their columns to address child labor in the United States, modern journalists like Mark Nonkes use their work to bring attention to child labor exploitation in developing nations such as Bangladesh (Nonkes, 2019). Another example is the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The addition rule would be used to calculate the probability because we must find the probability of the face card or spade card.

Probability: 12/52 + 13/52 = 25/52 = 11/26

Total number of cards: 52 number of face cards: 12 number of spades: 13

the probability that a randomly selected card is a face card or a spade is 11/26
