DISCUSSION 1 (Veronica)
Part 1: Personal Connection
Create an introduction that addresses the following:
• Introduce yourself by sharing a movie or book you would recommend and why. Share one
lesson you learned from the book or movie.
Hello everyone! My name is Veronica Ellison. It’s nice to meet you or learn alongside you again! I
recommend the movie Encanto. One of the lessons I learned from Encanto is just how crucial
communication is.
• Discuss why you think assessing young children matters in the early childhood setting.
Relate your current work experiences, individual experiences, or future work with children.
Assessing young children matters in the early childhood setting because it allows us as educators
to measure the effectiveness of our teaching and make whatever modifications in the curriculum
are needed to provide the best possible learning experience for the child.
• Discuss your experience (if any) with assessing young children. Share explicit examples of
these experiences.
In my experiences working with young children I have used many types of Formative assessments.
At my current facility we USE ELM curriculum and there are various assessments such as activity
based and progress monitoring.
• Reflect on this statement: “Early childhood professionals’ commitment to equity and
diversity has a significant impact on children’s learning outcomes and social and emotional
well-being.” Why is it important to consider equity and diversity when assessing young
children? Equity and diversity are both critical elements to consider when evaluating young
children because children are individual learners who will learn at their own pace. A big
influence on how children learn is their influences and they should be assessed
accordingly.

DISCUSSION 2 (KayC)
Hey Class,
My name is Akaisia Phillips, but I prefer to go by KayC. I find joy in spending time with my family and
nurturing young children aged 4-5. I am a devoted wife to a wonderful woman and a mother to 4
children and 3 dogs. One of the books that has deeply resonated with me is “Like Water for
Chocolate” by Laura Esquirel. This beautiful, multicultural story has taught me the importance of
hospitality and the true nature of love.
I strongly believe that assessing young children in early childhood settings is crucial. It allows
teachers to effectively communicate important developmental milestones to families and creates
opportunities for parents and educators to collaborate in supporting their children. Every day, I
ensure that my lesson plans are inclusive and that my interactions are free from bias, as our
ultimate goal is to work together with the best interests of each child at heart.
The commitment of early childhood professionals to equity and diversity has a profound impact on
children’s learning outcomes and their emotional well-being. It is our responsibility to ensure that
every child feels included, valued, welcomed, and heard.

Formative Assessments
Is the

Formative
Purpose: What is the purpose of this
type of assessment?
Teachers use formative assessment as a way to understand
and support children’s learning progress, helping them make
informed decisions on how to best teach and guide their
students.
Beliefs: What are some potential
biases that can impact the use of this
type of assessment? (What kinds of
inequities could occur?)
When teachers approach a situation with a personal opinion
and a fixed mindset, it can sometimes be challenging for
students to feel understood and supported.
What are some
strategiesand methods of each type

How can we assess and collect data from students learning.

Formative assessment will be used daily within my
classroom

DISCUSSION 3 (Chantelle)
Hello Everyone,
My name is Chantelle and I am the director of an early learning center in Fort Myers, Florida. And
yes, we have a hurricane passing through in the next 24 hours! One of my favorite movies is Field of
Dreams. The movie is about following your dreams and fulfilling your passion even when people
don’t believe in or support you. I have always been passionate about early childhood education,
even though I was told to go into elementary education because of the pay. My heart was in early
childhood, and I knew it was where I was meant to be.
Assessment is necessary in early childhood education. Curriculum and assessment go hand in
hand as an ongoing process to ensure we meet all children’s needs to help their growth and
development. Authentic assessment of the children drives the curriculum, so children are
challenged but successful in what they are learning.
I have used many types of assessment tools throughout the years. In my current center, we use
Teaching Strategies Gold, ALRI (alphabet letter recognition inventory), and STAR Early Literacy. The
state requires the ALRI and STAR for our voluntary pre-kindergarten program to continue to receive
funding. The children are tested three times per year on a laptop and results go directly to the state
department of education. Funding for the program is based on the growth of the scores over the
course of the year. I like Teaching Strategies Gold because, if used to fidelity, is an authentic tool
and snapshot of children’s learning and growth. I require my teachers to take the Interrater
Reliability training and test so we know we are using it correctly.
We must always consider equity and diversity in assessments of young children. My center is on a
university campus in Southwest Florida. I have children of professors from other countries and
children of parents who are first-generation immigrants. For many of them, English is not their first
language. The state assessments are on computers and only in English. They don’t even consider
that some children do not know how to use a laptop. I have had to work with my teachers to modify
the first few weeks of school to incorporate lessons on how to use a laptop so that when we assess
them, we are assessing them on the content and not on the use of a mouse or touchpad. Teachers
also have to sign paperwork stating that we will not help the children with the tests: no hints,
explanations, nothing. We may have a child learning English who is unfamiliar with a word because
they have never been exposed to it. As you can see, this is a heated topic down here.
Questions Responses
What type of assessment do you wish
to research?
Diagnostic assessment
Is the
assessment formative or summative?
Formative
Purpose: What is the purpose of this
type of assessment?
It evaluates children’s abilities
and identifies areas where they
may need extra support
Beliefs: What are some potential
biases that can impact the use of this
type of assessment? (What kinds of
inequities could occur?)
Even though it is called
diagnostic, it is not a diagnosis
of a problem. We are not to
label a child with something. It
can help us pursue outside help
if needed.
What are some strategies and
methods of each type of assessment?
Observations, screening tools
like hearing, language, vision,
family interviews
When could you use this type of
assessment while working with young
children?
Anytime. It is best to do it at the
beginning of the year to help
teachers understand what the
children know and can do. At
any time throughout the year,
these can be done if a teacher
feels there is an issue or
concern with a child.
