Meta-Writing Project:
Part I: Literacy Narrative
Write a literacy history of sorts. This is your own narrative – story — about how you arrived to college. Who were your “literacy sponsors” (Brandt 3)? Were they your parents, an older sibling, a teacher, a coach? What do you remember about learning how to read and write? What are the positive memories? What are the negative ones? Who guided you, coached you, humiliated you? Who helped pique your curiosity? Who helped you make connections?
What made you form the opinions that you have regarding reading and writing? Are these opinions positive, negative, or both? Why? If some of the feelings are negative, which, let’s face it, some probably are (unfortunately, we have all had negative experiences regarding literacy), how have you or can you start to overcome them?
Are there any special moments in your literacy journey that stand out in your memory? Why do these stand out? Is there a first book you remember reading? Was there a specific paper or project you created in school that made an impact on you? Do you have a favorite piece of writing that you have created? You may want to bring in any artifacts you have collected on this journey: a favorite book, a poem, a paper from school of which you are proud, etc.
Please cite the readings that we are covering in the English 100 College Composition. You must cite at least three.
Brandt – Who were your sponsors of literacy?
Brown, Hawisher, & Selfe — Do you identify with any of these three women more than the other?
Douglass – This self-made man had severe oppression to overcome. Luckily, we do not face this type of oppression today. How does your privilege differ from that of Douglass’s oppression? What obstacles have you had to overcome?
Kingsolver – What role does the environment play in your literacy development? What about socio-economic status? How does the SES of Appalachians differ from that of the people from where you came? How does it differ from UD?
Liu – This is another story of overcoming oppression and believing in yourself. How has your culture shaped your literacy habits? What types of systemic oppression did Liu have to overcome?
X – Malcolm X taught himself how to read and write in prison by copying every word in a dictionary. Again, hopefully none of us face this type of oppression, but what obstacles have you had to overcome? Also, what privilege do you have in terms of literacy that Malcolm X and others do not have?
Rose – This is honestly my favorite piece from the group of readings. It talks about the American school system. Mind you, this setting is an inner-city Catholic school. It discusses standardized test scores, tracking in school, peers/classmates’ influence, and good and bad teachers. What are some of your experiences with all of those?
Part II: Auto-ethnography
How do you go about the tasks of reading and writing today? How do you feel about it? What rituals do you have? Do you have a special place to read? To write? What tools do you use? A pen, paper, computer? Do you pre-write? Do you write first drafts? Is revision part of your process? If not, why? What are your favorite writing occasions? Do you use peers to edit? What piques your curiosity today? How do you make connections? How do you create value in your writing? What habits could you improve upon and what tools could you add to your writing occasions? For example, do you visit the Write Place? Should you?
