- Based on the textbook reading and the lecture, as well as your own research, how would you describe the role of women during the Romantic era? How is it different from the Classical era? How did the opportunities for women in music change in the Romantic period? Be sure to mention names of female musicians and composers.

- Why was opera an ideal vehicle for nationalism and exoticism? Give and describe specific musical examples. What innovations did Richard Wagner bring to the world of opera?
- Describe the original function of spirituals, as well as what happened to the music once it had been performed in concert. Do you think the songs are still “spirituals” in your opinion?
- Make sure to use your own words when posting your responses. DO NOT simply rely on quotes of exact sentences or paragraphs from the textbook, but digest the information!
- Be sure to exercise your critical thinking skills and compose your responses using your own original style of writing.
- Be sure to compose complete paragraphs developing your ideas and analysis. “One-word” or “one-sentence” answers will not be sufficient in this course.
