Strategies to Improve Communication in Healthcare

Amongst surgical patients at the Colorado Springs Orthopedic and Spine Center, will there be an increase in patient satisfaction scores as a result of improved staff communication?

Low patient satisfaction scores

Patient safety and patient outcomes (Burgener, 2017)

Strengthen and improve patient safety & satisfaction scores

Improved communication for patients and staff

Currently, patient satisfaction scores related to a broad topic of communication are approximately 2 on a 1-5 scale. According to patient surveys, there is a lack of communication between the surgery center staff, orthopedic office, and the patients. Addressing the concern for improved or enhanced communication by health care providers within a health care organization is crucial, as this may directly affect patient safety and patient outcomes (Burgener, 2017). Making improvements in communication can only strengthen and improve patient safety, and maximize patient satisfaction score (Burgener, 2017).

3

Literature Review

For each article you reviewed, you will give a brief overview of the article. Do not state the title of the article, but use the authors names.

Why did you choose this article, and how will it help your project.

See the next slides for examples.

Use the notes to put all of the information from your paper for each article. If it is long, summarize what the article noted, but make sure you reference the article properly on the slide.

4

Literature Review

Parker et al. (2018) noted that approximately 85% of recognized healthcare associated errors were directly related to communication failures.

This study was used as it noted a direct correlation to poor communication and healthcare errors.

Literature Review

Between 1995-2015, 12,222 sentinel events were reported, and noted that ineffective communication was the root cause of 66% of the events (Burgener, 2017)

This study was chosen as it notes there is ineffective communication, or a breakdown in communication, which is leading to unfavorable outcomes.

6

Literature Review

Hospitalized patients spend most of their time interacting with nurses than any other provider, which demonstrates an increased need for clear communication between patients, nurses, and physicians (Trotta et al., 2020)

Literature Review

Identifying strategies to improve communication through evidence has the potential to decrease sentinel events related to communication, and ultimately improve patient outcomes (Wang et al., 2018)

Interventions for Change

What is the current method (what is the C in PICOT)

What is the proposed intervention to change

What is the goal of the intervention

Interventions for Change – Example

Currently, there is a lack of/or poor communication between healthcare members and the patients

The intervention is to implement communication tools between healthcare providers

Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety (TeamSTEPPS) (Parker et al. 2018, Natafgi et al. 2017)

Improved outcomes (Parker et al. 2018)

Decreased adverse events related to communication (Parker et al. 2018, Trotta et al. 2020).
