The level of independence of practice for the Nurse Practitioner in the state of Florida is limited due to the requirement to be working under the supervision of a physician under a formal collaborative agreement. Their prescribing authority is also limited and outlined within the collaborative agreement with the supervising physician. They are also limited to having to hold a DEA license in order to prescribe controlled substances under their supervising physician. (

The process to obtain licensure in the state of Florida includes first completing a Masters or Doctorate program from an accredited school. Next, they are to take a board exam and obtain a certification in their chosen specialty such as Acute Care or Psychiatric Mental Health. A common organization for this includes the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) (American Nurses Credentialing Center, 2022). Then, dependent on their role they are to complete a collaborative agreement and if needed, obtain a DEA license. In addition to this, the NP should be expected to regularly complete continuing education to ensure they are up to date with current evidence based practice guidelines.
This restriction to the Nurse Practitioner practice in the state of Florida impacts the community by lessening assess to preventative healthcare. Our Emergency Departments are often overcrowded with patients whos’ chief complaints could be more appropriately handled in the primary care or walk in clinic setting. In order to still evaluate and treat these non emergent patients, the hospitals must use recourses including nurses, providers, and patient rooms. This then increases medical encounter costs and takes resources away from patients who really need emergency care (Javidan et al., 2021).
Access to NPs impacts healthcare disparities by improving access to preventative and specialized care, reducing weight times, and providing patient-centered care. NPs often work in settings which provide preventive care and education. This then promotes healthy behaviors and helps to prevent illness or complications. The increased availability of NPs can also help contribute to a reduction in wait times for healthcare services. Being able to access care in a timely manner is a critical aspect in addressing health disparities as a delay in care can lead to worsening outcomes. Lastly, NPs are prepared to deliver patient-centered care in which they place the individualized needs of their patients at the center of their care. This approach can then help reduce disparities by ensuring that healthcare is personalized for each patient, leading to better patient outcomes (Nikpour et al., 2023).
