USING THE WALDEN LIBRARY
Where can you find evidence to inform your thoughts and scholarly writing? Throughout your degree program, you will use research literature to explore ideas, guide your thinking, and gain new insights. As you search the research literature, it is important to use resources that are peer-reviewed and from scholarly journals. You may already have some favorite online resources and databases that you use or have found useful in the past. For this Discussion, you explore databases available through the Walden Library.
Note: Unless otherwise noted, initial postings to Discussions are due on or before Day 3, and response postings are due on or before Day 6. You are required to participate in the Discussion on at least three different days (a different day for main post and each response). It is important to adhere to the weekly time frame to allow others ample time to respond to your posting. In addition, you are expected to respond to questions directed toward your own initial posting in a timely manner.

College one post for( EMS)
Initially, it takes a little time and effort to figure out which search platforms are better for one topic over another. After spending some time practicing with various features on the University database; it becomes relatively easy to navigate. Although there are many useful platforms to explore, PubMed proves to be excellent.
PubMed is a platform that archives journal articles in life sciences and literature on biomedical topics. Some of the covered topics found were in medicine, nursing, healthcare systems and dentistry. For those that are interested in healthcare related topics, PubMed proves to be a wonderful resource. Due to the fact that that PubMed is focused on the sciences and healthcare; this platform would not serve as a great resource for those that are looking for literature out side this realm.
According to PubMed, the database contains more than 36 million citations and abstracts of biomedical literature. The system allows for an easy way to search for articles using key terms in MeSH database or by combining multiple key terms using a feature called BooLean Operator(PubMed).
The article that was chosen was based on psychological medicine. The article, “Role of the gut microbiome in three major psychiatric disorders,” discusses the relationship between major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia spectrum disorder. The premise of the research done in this article conveys that disruption in the gut-microbiome has an influence on certain psychological disorders. The articles speaks to various ways that gut bacteria disruption can occur as well as how it can be improved upon. Interventions such as possible benefits of probiotic and fecal microbiota translation are considered for gut biome improvement .
Hello Class,
I am glad this discussion topic came up because there is one discussion topic I have been so curious about for a while now, “Nurse staffing ratios and patient safety.” According to a study “Nurse staffing has been a significant controversial topic that raises concerns on patient safety, quality of care, human resources, and financial implications in acute care hospitals (Olley., et al. 2019). The study adds that nursing accounts for approximately 70% of salaries and wages paid by health services budgets in acute care services, and evidence as to the efficacy and effectiveness of any staffing methodology is required. It is important for acute care hospitals to impose better nurse-to-patient ratios to reduce nurse burnout and to promote patient safety.
There are numerous databases for searching peer-reviewed journal articles but CINAHL has always been my favorite. I utilized the CINAHL database to choose an article for this topic. The problem I encountered with selecting an article was getting one that was more targeted toward my topic of interest as there were so many articles displayed. This made it difficult for me to narrow down and decide what article to use. The search should have been more tailored and specific to what I wanted, like using keywords in the search bar to show specific articles related to “The effects of nurse staffing ratios on patient safety and standards of care.”
I believe that the CINAHL database will be helpful to my peers because it is free and easy to use. It is devoted to thousands of articles and journals in nursing and Allied health literature. The database displays articles by dates, and researchers are redirected to CINAHL Plus which filters the articles more by periodicals, books, and continuing education. I would highly recommend this because it is easy to access, readily available, and offers many full-text and peer-reviewed articles. It also has a citation tool, which can give you citations of articles in different formats.
