Hello everyone,

What factors influence the gender wage gap?

When trying to figure out which social science would be more interested in this topic, I had trouble choosing between sociology and economics. Specifically looking at sociology and the perspective of conflict theory because it focuses on the way inequities and inequalities contribute to social, social, political, and power differences. Sociologists can try to determine what contributes to the wage gap. Is it discrimination, career choices, lack of opportunities? Economist can analyze and determine the systems created or allowed for the allocation of goods and services (Mayer, 2010). This can help answer the question of why and how the wage gap exists. When considering the gender wage gap between men and women research shows that women make less than men. “Women earn less, on the whole, because of the choices they make, such as taking low-stress jobs in low paying industries in exchange for more time at home to take care of their families”. (Higgins & Regan 2016). Due to women and the choices, they make when it comes to career choice or starting a family they tend to make less.

The research subjects would be those who are in the working field and even those who have retired. To study if the wage gap has improved or remained the same.

The research method that’s most appropriate is unobtrusive research method because it’ll allow researchers to look at past wages of men and women and compare data.
