4.2 Discussion: Cognitions and Behavior

I do agree that thoughts affect behavior, I believe our thoughts can affect our emotions and our actions. I think positive thoughts can lead to positive thought patterns and it can lead to motivating us towards reaching our goals. I think we can recognize our thoughts and work towards improving our behavior and thought processes.
I believe there is a relationship between thought patterns and behavior, and we are able to change our thoughts and promote well-being. For example, if I wake up and I tell myself positive affirmations about how my day is going to go and what steps I’m going to take to have a good day those positive thought patterns lead me to positive actions. I believe it can alter your thought patterns and positively promote beneficial behavior. I think that having positive self-talk and controlling how we think and being mindful of the power in positivity it can influence the way we perceive the world. I think our thought processes have an impact on how we behave, and our overall well-being and we have the power to influence those thought processes.
I think changing thought patterns can enhance Christians relationships with God. I think by focusing on the blessings that God has bestowed upon us and having gratitude within life can cultivate and improve the relationship with God. I also think being intentional about deepening your relationship with God and setting aside time to grow that connection by meditating or reading the Bible attending church or gaining closeness to God allows for a Christian to enhance their relationship with God. Having positive thought patterns can have an influential impact on your relationship with God and it can be fulfilling and purposeful.
I believe changing distorted thoughts about God can have a good impact on how we worship read and pray. If understandings of God are through misconceptions it can make you feel disconnected with him. I think challenging those thoughts and welcoming God’s true goodness can lead to a closer relationship to God. I think prayers can become more intimate and intentional when you have a good relationship with God and the Bible can bring more light to life and provide a positive experience. Understanding God’s love and grace leads to impactful fellowship with him.
First changing the behavior then changing the thought might be effective, I think changing behavior can have a positive effect on mindset. For instance, I think if people made efforts to take a walk and enjoy some sunlight that may have a positive effect on their mindset it may help to change negative thought patterns and promote positivity to change the behavior then the thought. I think changing behavior can change thoughts and help to reach goals.

Cognitive psychology explores the complex relationship between thoughts and behavior, highlighting the deep impact that one’s mental processes can have on outward actions. At its core, cognitive psychology suggests that thoughts serve as the driving force behind behaviors, acting as the go-between for stimuli and responses. This perspective suggests that the way individuals perceive, interpret, and process information significantly influences their subsequent actions. The cognitive-behavioral link is evident in various aspects of human experience. For instance, cognitive processes such as attention, memory, and problem-solving play pivotal roles in shaping behavior. An individual’s selective attention to particular stimuli guides their perception of the environment, ultimately influencing how they respond to different situations. Memory processes also contribute to the accumulation of experiences, shaping future behaviors based on past encounters. Problem-solving, another crucial cognitive function, enables individuals to adapt and modify their behavior in response to challenges, showcasing the dynamic between thoughts and actions.
Thought processes definitely have had an impact on my behavior—in fact, the same thought process has had both a positive and negative impact at the same time. I don’t know many people who enjoy prepping for a job interview, I find it to be incredibly stressful. I can remember preparing for an interview, trying to hold onto positive and self-assuring thoughts, such as believing in my qualifications and abilities. The hope was that this belief would manifest into confident and assertive behaviors during the interview. Thinking through on my past experiences and my skill set should evoke a level of confidence as I go to meet, which would result in consistent eye contact with my interviewer as well as clear and direct communication showcasing my skills in a more pointed way than I would in typical conversation. On the other hand, contrary to my positive thoughts about my abilities creeps in the negative anxious thoughts about my abilities. I begin the interview process with such confidence but then I begin to experience feelings such as self-doubt and fear of failure which then morphs my expressions of confidence into anxious and hesitant behaviors. My body language shifts and I begin to struggle to express myself effectively.
Changing your thought patterns can play a crucial role in fostering spiritual growth and forming a deeper connection with Jesus. In order to do so, you will have to work towards aligning your thought process with the things that align with the teachings and values of Jesus. By consciously cultivating positive thoughts centered around faith, love, and hope, a believer can reinforce their trust and faith in Jesus as well as His teachings. Affirmations of gratitude, trust, and devotion can help reshape negative or doubtful thought patterns, fostering a more glory focused and faith-filled mindset. Additionally, mindfulness and contemplation are crucial in shifting your thought pattern closer towards Jesus. Mindfulness involves focusing on the present moment with an open heart. Practicing mindfulness and incorporating prayer can help redirect thoughts toward a more intimate connection with Jesus. This intentional focus on Christ will deepen your spiritual relationship with Jesus. Similarly, engaging in time in the Word will help shift your focus. Regular meditation on scripture can reshape the cognitive processes, reinforcing positive values and virtues that are emphasized by Jesus.
