Discussion for financial accounting course

Respond to the three unrelated questions in a single post by the end of the day on Thursday (3/5).  This is a “post first” forum. In order to see other responses to these questions, you must first post your response.

Once you have made your initial response, please respond to a post of one of your fellow classmates by 11pm on Sunday (3/8).

In your follow-up response, it is not necessary for you to comment on all the points raised by your classmate.  However, to receive full credit, you need to state something more than simply “I agree with you…”

Discussion Forum Rules

Please be friendly, positive and self-reflective.  When people cannot see you, and also do not know you, it is very easy for your tone to be misconstrued.  Sometimes I imagine myself as the recipient before sending off my discussion board posts.

Question #1

Jim Ramsay is a purchasing agent for Hooks Incorporated.  Avery Company is one of the suppliers that Jim works with. Jim’s contact at Avery offered him a free family vacation for four to Disney World (flight/park tickets/hotel) if he purchases 20% more of his supplies from Avery.

Jim hasn’t taken his family on a vacation in over a year. He also hasn’t received a raise from Hooks in over two years even though he knows he is the top performing purchasing agent for the company.

What are your thoughts on this case?

Question #2

Sally Baker is a bookkeeper at Parry Company. Sally received the monthly bank statement from Northern Bank.  Sally noticed a $1,500 mistake made by the bank in Parry Company’s favor.  Sally, informed her manager about the error.  The manager replied that as long as the mistake benefits the company, she should not tell Northern Bank about the error.

What are your thoughts on this case?

Question #3

Most companies have a “Code of Conduct”. This document outlines the responsibilities and proper practices for an individual in the company.  In most cases, new employees need to sign a letter acknowledging that they have read and understand the “Code of Conduct”.

Do you really believe that having a written code of conduct will reduce fraud and other dishonest acts in an organization? Why or why not?
