2.2 | CHARACTERISTICS OF LIVING THINGS

Chapter one in your text, covers several aspects of the definition of life. Two important concepts include how living things are classified, and the levels of organization of living things. In Section 1.1, life is defined as a state of existence, with examples of characteristics that are shared by all living things. Non-living things may possess
some of these characteristics but not all. You are to list five
statements giving characteristics of living things.

Using the Chapter information (
only):
Do not google for answers.

1. List five

statements
 of living things characteristics.
Be sure that the characteristics are statements and not just one word.

Note: Six characteristics are
explained in Section 1.1 in Chapter 1.

2. Give an explanation of each characteristic.

Be sure to follow the correct procedure for submitting assignments. (See Student Assignment Information)

1. Number each of your responses

2. Use appropriate grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

This assignment should be submitted in a WORD document by Thursday at midnight.

2.3 | CATEGORIES OF CLASSIFICATION

To help you to conceptualize the first portion of Chapter 1, you will review information covered. The following concepts have been established:

· Life is a condition of existence based on the possession of protoplasm, having an energy requirement, being able to grow and reproduce, and the respond to stimuli.

· All living things are similar, based on chemical components

· All living things are made of basic cells

· Living things have a unique chemical and structural organization

· Non-living things may possess some similar components as living but not all

· Grouping of living and non-living things is based on the possession of unique structural and chemical organization

Now that the living and non-living qualities have been determined, we can now focus on the ways living things are grouped. Section 1.2 of Chapter 1 focuses on those specific means of plant and animal grouping or classification. Because living things are so diverse, it is necessary to group them in a certain way that categorizes them based on their common structures. They are grouped from larger groups to smaller groups. The larger groups have more general characteristics in common, and the smaller (more closely related groups), show more specific commonalities.

Part I. Read Section 1.2 of Chapter 1, (Evolution, the Unifying Concept of Biology). Using Carlos Linnaeus’ system of classification:

1. Provide the most modern version of the classification system that groups all organisms in eight (8) groups from largest to smallest.

2. Then, classify man and a corn plant using the eight groups from the largest (most inclusive) to the smallest (least inclusive).

3. Give the scientific name for man and the corn.

Be sure to number your responses (answers) as the questions are numbered in this assignment.

For #2, place the specific classifications of man and corn in a chart as shown below:

2:4 CHAPTER 1 – ASSESS

THIS ASSIGNMENT IS COMPLETE I JUST NEED IT REVIEWED TO MAKE SURE ANSWERS ARE CORRECT.

This next assignment covers the general content of Chapter 1.  Your examination questions will be very similar to these questions that you are assigned.  You should have a general understanding of the chapter content from your reading and completion of previous assignments.

Part I. Your assignment is to (click on the blue highlight link below, Open, Enable Editing) and answer questions 1-13 in ASSESS of Chapter 1.  Please follow these guidelines when answering these and ALL multiple-choice questions.

______________________________________________________________________________

You should number your responses (1, 2, 3, 4 or a, b, c, etc.). To answer questions, you have two options. Either:

1. Type questions, type the 4 or 5 choices, then indicate your choice by stating the answer, or highlighting the answer.

2. The other choice is to make complete statements including questions and answers.

Note: When answering multiple choice questions, please
do not provide answers with just a, b, c, or d.  State what the answer is. If your choice is (all of these, or both c and d), state what the choices are. Please do not just give answers. State what the choices are to the questions that are being answered. (See options above or options at the top of the Chapter 1 ASSESS document).

NOTE: Assignments should be submitted through CANVAS ONLY.

WHO OR WHAT

In previous assignments (How Living Things are Classified), living things were grouped into eight specific categories (domain, kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species). These organisms are grouped in the categories based on their structural similarities ONLY.

Your assignment is to group the following (in highlight) into
three large general groups. Name the groups based on their showing characteristics of life, the manner in which they get their
food, and
structural characteristics.

Ant, mushroom, peach tree, earthworm, dinosaur, rabbit, sandpaper, water, fish, automobile, milk, book, ivy, pencil and monkey.

Explain why you have selected each for the

three
designated group. For example, if the earthworm is in whatever group you selected, explain why it is in the group with your other selected members of the same group.
