Interview Project: Person with a Disability or an
Agency that Serves People with Disabilities

Assignment Description
SPED 418/518 Spring 20203

Dr. Samuel Sennott

This is your interview assignment and you have some good choice in how you conduct your
project. Expect to spend approximately 10 hours, spread out over about two weeks. The
opportunity before you is to build upon your readings and lectures and interview an individual
with a disability. Alternatively, choose to interview an agency that serves people with
disabilities. I hope you can create a meaningful piece of work that serves as your final for our
course.

Objective:
The objective of this assignment is to provide you with an opportunity to gain insight into the
experiences and perspectives of individuals with disabilities or the agencies that serve them.
By conducting an interview, students will develop a deeper understanding of the challenges
faced by individuals with disabilities and the resources available to support them. This project
aims to enhance students’ awareness, empathy, and knowledge of the field of special
education. As your professor, it is my hope that this can be a transformative experience for
you, but please do not put pressure on yourself. Just dive in and engage with someone or
some entity and trust your choice and process. Now, here are some helpful instructions to
complete your task. I hope the work flows with ease for you.

Instructions:
1. Select a Person with a Disability or an Agency: Each student will choose either an individual
with a disability or an agency that serves people with disabilities as the focus of their interview
project. The selection should be based on personal interest and relevance to the field of special
education.

2. Interview Preparation: Before conducting the interview, students should research and
familiarize themselves with the chosen individual or agency. Explore their background,
experiences, services provided, challenges faced, and any other relevant information. Prepare
a list of thoughtful and meaningful questions to guide the interview process.

3. Conduct the Interview: Students will schedule and conduct an interview with their chosen
person with a disability or a representative from the selected agency. The interview can be
conducted in person, over the phone, or via video conference. Students should demonstrate
professionalism, sensitivity, and respect throughout the interview process. Record the interview
with the consent of the interviewee, ensuring accuracy in capturing their responses.

4. Reflection and Analysis: After the interview, students should reflect on the insights gained
and analyze the interviewee’s perspectives and experiences. Identify key themes, challenges,
and strengths observed during the interview. Consider how the information aligns with the
concepts and principles discussed in the course.

5. Project Report: Compile the findings from the interview, reflection, and analysis into a
comprehensive project report. The report should include an introduction, background
information about the interviewee or agency, a summary of the interview, reflection on
the experience, analysis of the interviewee’s perspectives, and a conclusion.

Use appropriate citations and references to support any claims made. Expectations are three
to five double spaced pages in 12 point font, but these are not hard limits.

Good toolset and workflow:
Open a zoom meeting, enable captions and record the meeting. Now you will be generating
both a transcript and a recording of the meeting.
